Hugo Ribeiro

Hugo Ribeiro is a Portuguese researcher who earned his PhD in Biomedical Sciences (Biogeochemistry) in 2013 from the Biomedical Sciences Institute Abel Salazar (ICBAS) at the University of Porto, Portugal. He has contributed to numerous Portuguese and international projects at the Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR, Portugal), focusing on the effects of metals and petroleum hydrocarbons on nitrogen cycle processes and optimizing nitrogen removal in wastewater treatment systems. Hugo has authored 16 peer-reviewed international journal publications. As part of the Portuguese MarinEye and Coral projects, he also invented and holds an international patent for a microbiome-capturing prototype. Currently, his research focuses on developing a pipeline to identify biological nitrification inhibitors (BNIs) aimed at reducing the microbial conversion of fertilizer nitrogen into greenhouse gases.
