ACTIONr Training Visit # 02 (January 2024) -Vienna (Austria) – (January 15-26, 2024)

Hosted by: Archaea Biology and Ecogenomics Unit, Department of Ecogenomics and Systems Biology; University of Vienna

Organizers: Prof. Dr C. Schleper, Dr M. Kerou, Dr L. Hodgskiss

During a two-week training program hosted by the University of Vienna’s Archaea Biology and Ecogenomics Unit, two members from the University of Thessaly (UTH), Dimitrios Dalkidis and Alexandros Kanellopoulos, participated in specialized training focused on the proteomics and comparative genomics of ammonia-oxidising microorganisms (AOM). Led by Prof. Dr. Christa Schleper, Dr. Melina Kerou, and Dr. Logan Hodgskiss, the training began with theoretical sessions covering biomolecule extraction principles and LC-MS/MS dataset analysis, followed by hands-on experiments such as biomass harvesting and protein/RNA extraction. The second week emphasized proteomic dataset analysis and also included a workshop on archaeal genomics. Throughout the training, participants engaged in discussions and a seminar on AOM bioenergetics, enhancing their understanding of AOM physiology and ecology. Dimitrios and Alexandros demonstrated proficiency in laboratory techniques and data analysis, gaining comprehensive skills and theoretical understanding in AOM. This exchange enriched their knowledge and equipped them to apply their expertise in future scientific endeavors, contributing to the Plant and Environmental Biotechnology Laboratory’s goals.
