ACTIONr Training Visit #04 (March 2025) – Vienna (Austria) – (March 10–21, 2025)
Hosted by: Archaea Biology and Ecogenomics Unit, Department of Ecogenomics and Systems Biology; University of Vienna
Organizers: Prof. Dr. C. Schleper, Dr. Logan Hodgskiss
During a two-week training program at the University of Vienna’s Archaea Biology and Ecogenomics Unit, Paraskevi Amanatidou and Dimitrios Dalkidis, PhD students from the University of Thessaly (UTH) and members of the ACTIONr team, participated in specialized training focused on statistical analysis and transcriptomic data interpretation in microbial ecology. Led by Dr. Logan Hodgskiss, the training combined theoretical sessions with hands-on exercises, covering key statistical methodologies such as t-tests, ANOVA, and non-parametric analyses, as well as advanced techniques like Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and visualization methods for transcriptomic datasets. Participants engaged in lab meetings, research discussions, and applied statistical tools to real datasets, enhancing their analytical skills and scientific communication. This exchange program provided an opportunity for Paraskevi and Dimitrios to integrate cutting-edge statistical approaches into their research on biological nitrification inhibitors and microbial interactions in nitrogen cycling. The expertise gained will be transferred to UTH, specifically benefiting the Departments of Biochemistry and Biotechnology and Environmental Sciences, contributing to ongoing and future research initiatives.
