Graeme Nicol is a CNRS Director of Research and formally the AXA Chair in Microbial Ecology at École Centrale de Lyon. His research has mainly focused on understanding the fundamental contributions of different prokaryote groups to fertiliser-derived nitrogen transformations and impacts on nitrate production and N2O emissions. This has included elucidating the role of archaea and bacteria to ammonia oxidation in different soil systems using cultivation, soil microcosm and metagenomic approaches. He has also recently developed research interests in soil virus ecology using chemolithoautotrophic populations and their viruses as model systems for examining the evolution and activity of host-virus interactions and impacts on C and N biogeochemical processes.
